MVHR can help reduce your heating bills, but it is worth being honest about how, and by how much, because it is not a heating system and it is sometimes oversold as one. What MVHR actually does is recover heat from the stale air it extracts from your home and use it to warm the fresh air coming in, so you lose far less warmth through ventilation than you otherwise would. In an airtight, well-insulated home, that adds up to a genuine reduction in the amount of heating you need. In a draughty one, most of the benefit simply leaks away.

There is also a running cost to weigh against the saving, because MVHR uses electricity to run its fans continuously in the background. So the real question is not only how much heat it keeps in, but whether that saving outweighs the modest cost of running the unit. In the right home it comfortably does, and once you add the better air quality and the reduction in condensation and damp, it becomes genuinely worthwhile. Below we explain how MVHR affects your heating bills, when it saves money and when it does not, and what decides the size of the saving.

How MVHR affects your heating bills

To understand the saving, it helps to think about how a home loses heat through ventilation. Every home needs a supply of fresh air, but every time stale air leaves and cold air comes in, whether through open windows, extractor fans or trickle vents, it carries your heating out with it. In a well-sealed modern home, this ventilation heat loss is a meaningful share of the total.

MVHR tackles that loss directly. As it extracts warm, stale air from your kitchen, bathrooms and utility room, it passes that air through a heat exchanger, capturing the warmth and transferring it to the fresh air being drawn in. A good unit can recover as much as 90 per cent of the heat from the outgoing air, depending on the model, so the fresh air arrives already warmed rather than icy cold. Your heating system then has far less work to do to bring the house up to temperature, and that is where the reduction in your heating bill comes from.

Why the saving depends on your home

This is the part that marketing often glosses over. MVHR only saves you money on heating if your home can actually hold onto the heat it recovers, which comes down to airtightness and insulation. In our experience, MVHR works far better as a money-saving measure in an airtight, well-insulated home than in a draughty older one, because the recovered heat only stays put if the building fabric can keep it there, so the very same unit that pays its way comfortably in a new build can struggle to in a leaky property.

What we see is that the homes where MVHR genuinely cuts heating costs are new builds, deep retrofits and eco homes built or upgraded to a high standard of airtightness. In an older, uninsulated house with gaps around windows and floors, much of the air moves in and out through those gaps rather than through the system, so the heat recovery has less to work with and the saving shrinks. That does not mean MVHR is pointless in an older home, but it does mean the fabric needs sorting first for the bills to benefit.

The running cost you need to weigh against it

Because the fans run around the clock, MVHR does add a small, steady amount to your electricity use. In a well-designed, efficient system this running cost is modest, and in an airtight home it is comfortably outweighed by the heat the unit saves, leaving you better off overall. In a leaky home, where the heat recovery has less effect, that balance is much tighter, and it is possible for the running cost to swallow most of the saving. This is exactly why we look at the whole picture of a property before recommending MVHR, rather than treating it as an automatic win.

So how much can MVHR really save?

Honestly, the saving is best thought of as a worthwhile contribution rather than a dramatic cut, and it varies too much from home to home for any single figure to be meaningful. It depends on how airtight and well-insulated the property is, how efficient the unit is, how the home was ventilated before, and the relative cost of your heating fuel and your electricity. A well-sealed home that previously lost a lot of heat through open windows and extractor fans will see a clearer benefit than one that was already carefully managed.

The most sensible way to view MVHR is as one part of making a home efficient and comfortable, alongside good insulation and an efficient heating system, rather than as a standalone money-saving gadget. Its full value is the combination of lower ventilation heat loss, constant fresh filtered air, and far less condensation and damp, and it is that whole package, not the heating saving on its own, that makes it worth fitting.

Getting the most bill benefit from MVHR

A few things make the difference between a system that saves money and one that disappoints. Airtightness comes first, because as we have said, the recovered heat has to be held in the building to count. A high-efficiency heat recovery unit matters too, since the proportion of heat it can reclaim directly affects the saving. Correct commissioning is essential, because a system that has not been properly balanced and set up will not perform to its rating, and it is a requirement under the building regulations in any case. Finally, keeping the filters clean keeps the airflow and efficiency where they should be, so a system that is looked after keeps saving year after year.

Where MVHR fits alongside other improvements

It is worth being clear that MVHR is not a substitute for insulation or an efficient heating system, and it works best hand in hand with both. If a home is poorly insulated, the money is better spent on the fabric first, with MVHR following once the house is sealed and warm enough to make the most of it. In a new build, or a home already brought up to a good standard, MVHR is often the natural final piece, handling ventilation without undoing the heat you have worked to keep in. Approaching it in that order is how you get both the comfort and the savings.
